The Canadian Potato Genome Project (CPGP) which ran from 2002 - 2006 received nearly $4 million in support from three innovation agents: Genome Canada, the Atlantic Innovation Fund, and the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture and Aquaculture. Several components were also enhanced by investments from the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation. Genome Canada was the lead funding and information resource relating to genomics and proteomics in Canada. Dedicated to developing and implementing a national strategy in genomics and proteomics research for the benefit of all Canadians, and has established six Genome Centres across the country (Atlantic, Québec, Ontario, Prairies, Alberta, and British Columbia). Together with its six Genome Centres and with other partners, Genome Canada invests and manages large-scale research projects in key selected areas such as agriculture, environment, fisheries, forestry, health and new technology development. Genome Canada also supports research projects aimed at studying and analyzing the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues related to genomics research (GE3LS ). As the regional conduit for Genome Canada, Genome Atlantic provided corporate support, management consolidation, infrastructure and sequencing to the CPGP. Genome Canada funds were matched by investments from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, and the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture and Aquaculture. Delivered via the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) the Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF) is a program designed to strengthen the economy of Atlantic Canada by accelerating the development of knowledge-based industry. Since inception in 2000, it committed to over $500 million in R&D investment across several knowledge-based disciplines. The mission of the the New Brunswick Department of Agriculture and Aquaculture is to provide sustainable growth of the Agriculture and Aquaculture sectors through innovative partnerships, targeted policies and programs resulting in greater prosperity for New Brunswickers. Additional investments by the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) further enhanced the CPGP, primarily in the areas of human resource support in bioinformatics research and plant transformation. The mission of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF), an independent corporation, is to contribute to building the province's innovation capacity. The Foundation supports targeted and leveraged investments in innovation, and in research and development in New Brunswick. The NBIF investments focus on the development of innovation capacity, with an emphasis on New Brunswick’s priority clusters of advanced manufacturing, knowledge industry, life sciences and value-added natural resources. |
